What is AI estate document review?

Short answer

Tools that read wills, trusts and related documents and summarize who gets what, who's in charge and what's missing.

Definition

AI estate document review tools read a client's estate documents and produce a summary: fiduciaries, beneficiaries, distribution terms, key provisions and gaps, sometimes with a flowchart.

They're a starting point for an advisor's conversation with the client and the client's attorney.

Why it matters for advisors

Most advisors aren't estate attorneys, and reading a 60-page trust takes time. A good summary helps you spot obvious issues (an outdated trustee, missing documents) and ask better questions.

Summaries can be wrong or miss nuance. Treat them as a draft to check against the documents, and leave legal interpretation to counsel.

It's also a client experience tool. A one-page summary with a simple family and trustee diagram gives you something concrete to walk through in a meeting, and it often surfaces questions the client never thought to ask, like who the successor trustee is or when the documents were last updated.

Example

An advisor uploads a client's revocable trust, reads the summary, notices the successor trustee is the client's late brother and raises it at the next meeting with a suggestion to call their attorney.

Watch out for

Don't present an AI summary to a client as legal advice or as a complete reading of the documents.
