Can Financial Advisors Use ChatGPT? Compliance Basics

Short answer: Yes, many advisors use general AI assistants, but within firm policy. Keep client data out unless your firm approves the tool and plan, review every output for accuracy, and treat anything sent to clients or the public as a communication that may need review and archiving.

Updated October 21, 2026. Tool details come from each vendor's website and can change.

Start with your firm's policy

Many firms now have a written AI policy listing approved tools and what data may be entered. If yours doesn't, ask your chief compliance officer before you use ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Microsoft 365 Copilot for client work.

Client privacy

Treat a general AI assistant like any outside vendor. Don't paste in names, account numbers or other personal information unless the tool and plan have been approved for that use. Business and enterprise plans often have different data protections than consumer plans; check the vendor's current terms.

Accuracy

AI assistants can state wrong facts with confidence, including tax limits, rules and figures. Verify every number and rule against a primary source before you use it with a client.

Marketing and communications

Content created with AI is still your content. Posts, articles, emails and newsletters can fall under communications and advertising rules (for example, the SEC Marketing Rule for investment advisers and FINRA's communications rules for broker-dealers), and may need to go through your normal review and archiving process. Tools in our compliance & marketing review category can help.

Good low-risk uses

Drafting a blog outline, simplifying a technical explanation, brainstorming meeting agendas, rewriting your own text for clarity and summarizing public articles are common starting points that don't require client data.

FAQ

Is ChatGPT allowed for financial advisors?

That's a firm-level decision. Many firms allow it for some tasks with restrictions on client data. Check your firm's written policy.

Do AI-written posts need compliance approval?

If your firm requires approval for a type of communication, using AI to write it doesn't change that.
