What is an AI agent?

Short answer

AI that can take actions on its own to complete a task, such as updating a CRM, sending a message or filling a form.

Definition

An AI agent doesn't just answer. It plans steps and takes actions: looking things up, filling in forms, updating records, drafting and sometimes sending messages. FINRA's 2026 oversight report describes agents as systems capable of autonomously performing and completing tasks on behalf of a user.

In advisor tools this shows up as features that, for example, turn a meeting into CRM tasks and draft the follow-up, or fill account paperwork from a transcript.

Why it matters for advisors

Agents raise the stakes because mistakes become actions, not just words. FINRA lists risks including agents acting without human validation, acting beyond intended scope and authority, hard-to-audit reasoning, and mishandling sensitive data.

FINRA suggests firms consider how to monitor agent access, where to keep a human in the loop, how to track agent actions and how to set guardrails. For most firms that means: agents draft, people approve.

Example

A firm lets a notetaker's agent create CRM tasks automatically, but client emails stay in draft until the advisor reviews and sends them.

Watch out for

Check what an agent can do with the permissions you give it. Read-only access is a lot safer than permission to send or change records.
