What is an agentic workflow?
Short answer
A multi-step process where AI handles several steps in a row, such as notes to tasks to draft email, with people checking key points.
Definition
An agentic workflow chains several AI steps together so a task moves forward with less manual handoff. A meeting ends, the AI writes the summary, creates CRM tasks, drafts the follow-up email and prepares a document request, all queued for review.
It's less about one clever tool and more about connecting tools so work flows between them.
Why it matters for advisors
This is where real time savings come from in operations, and where supervision gets harder. Each step can introduce an error that the next step builds on.
Design the workflow with checkpoints: which steps run on their own, which need approval, and where the output is logged. Write those decisions down in your AI policy or procedures.
Start small. A good first agentic workflow is one where every step is easy to check, like gathering a client's last three meeting summaries and open tasks into a review prep sheet. Leave anything that moves money, changes account data or contacts clients for later, and keep a person approving each of those steps.
Example
After each review meeting, the firm's workflow drafts the recap and three CRM tasks. The advisor approves the recap, and the service team approves the tasks before they're assigned.
Watch out for
Automating a messy process makes the mess faster. Map the process before you automate it.
